Dr. Michael Wirth and Dariusz Grabka, an M.Sc. student at the University of Guelph are conducting a research study . We are looking for participants for a research study that involves image searching and tagging on a large online image database, such as Flickr.

We are currently looking for participants!  It’ll only take an hour or so of your time, and would be really appreciated.

Our next study is Tues Nov 11th @ 11:30 - 1:30pm, in room 001A of the Reynolds Building at the University of Guelph.  Check the Facebook Event!

Participant Consent

In order to participate in this study, you need to read the Consent to Participate in Research letter.  By continuing on with this process, you agree to the terms in that letter.  Please note that you have the right to withdraw at any time, and that you must be 18 years or older to participate.

The Experiment

This experiment has four steps, all of which can be done in the comfort of your typical internet browsing environment, like your home, or your workplace :-)

1.One. In your Firefox or Flock browser,  you will need to install the following applications in the following order. There is a video tutorial to help you through the process.

  1. Greasemonkey - “Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript.”
  2. Flickr Search Tagging Script - Allows you to tag Flickr photos with some help from your recent searches.

2.Two. Once the software has been installed, please email dgrabka [at] uoguelph [dot] ca with the following information:

  1. Your Flickr username
  2. Your preferred email address
3.Three. Within a few days we’ll respond with specific instructions (take a look at a sample), and a small number (4-10) of items to search for and tag in Flickr. There is a video tutorial to introduce you to the features we’d like you to experiment with.
4.Four. Once you’re done, we’ll ask you to fill out our post-experiment questionnaire.
And that’s it!  This whole process is expected to take only an hour or two of your time.

Support and Feedback

To connect with our participants, we’ve established a Flickr group: flickr.com/groups/searchtaggingstudy/ Feel free to join that group, participate in discussion, or invite your contacts.
